Each title in the Guardians of the Tide series refers to a form of sound or song. Moonrise’s Call, Song of the Rising Deep, Whispers of the Shadow Sea, Arc of Harmonies, and finally Cadence of Oblivion. But the reference goes much deeper than the titles.
Song is a broad term that covers many things within the world of Nix. While the word's meaning is fluid, songs are integral to Nix’s existence.
A song of Nix is typically defined as the vibrations an object gives off and the effects they have on the environment around it. Everything in Nix has a unique song dictated by its traits and qualities.
The songs of living beings are even more unique as they evolve throughout the being’s life. Numerous factors, including past life events and even current emotions, can alter a living being’s song. Some changes are temporary, while others permanently alter the song.
In some aspects, the songs of living beings could be compared to a soul, although there are a few differences. In its basic form, it is the energy of a being’s existence and the vibrational effects that energy has on the world around them.
Coincidentally, the waters of Nix don’t have their own song, though they are treated as if they do. The water is merely a conduit through which the vibrations of all songs can travel and intermingle. As the numerous songs flow through and combine within the water, they produce a new song, the Song of the Sea.
The term Song of the Sea is used throughout the Guardians series. It refers to a universal song composed of all others within a specific sea. Each song is like a single instrument in an orchestra, while the Song of the Sea is composed of all instruments within that sea’s domain.
Each sea of Nix holds different traits, terrain, and lifeforms; thus, the song of each sea is distinct. The vibrations of sand, stone, shells, creatures, and even the flow of currents make each Song of the Sea distinguishable from the others. Some residents of Nix are sensitive to these regional songs and can tell them apart and use this understanding to navigate.
Beyond the environmental songs, there is another class of songs in Nix, though they are not recognized as songs by most. These mysterious songs do not represent objects or beings but primal forces. The waters of Nix are sensitive to these powerful songs, easily affected and altered by their vibrations. Some among Nix, both people and animals, can use these songs to manipulate the water around them or alter their relationship to it. The people of Nix refer to these skills as Seaborn talents, though few understand how they work or even how they are obtained.
